Lama Chounyi was born in 1960 in Bordeaux, France. She became a Buddhist at the age of 27 and took monastic vows the following year. In the course of Lama Chounyi's spiritual education, she has been guided by many high masters of the Kagyu lineage: she completed a traditional three-year retreat under the direction of Lama Gendun Rinpoche at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling; she has received many teachings and guidance from Shamar Rinpoche and Jigme Rinpoche; for 7 years Lama Chounyi studied Buddhist philosophy under Khenpo Chodrag Rinpoche at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute in New Delhi; and the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje guided her during several retreats in Kalimpong. Presently, Lama Chounyi serves as Resident Teacher at the BodhiPath Buddhist Center located in Washington, D.C.
