Progressive Integration of the Meaning of Meditation, based on a text by Vimalamitra taught by the 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche
This February 2006, Shamar Rinpoche will begin a cycle of teachings, to be continued annually each February. This teaching belongs to the Tengyur and is based on a text by the great Indian scholar-translator Vimalamitra. It was through the efforts of Vimalamitra, Shantarakshita and Padmasambhava that the Nyingma Lineage was established in the early 7th century during the reign of King Trisong Detsen. Vimalamitra’s text emphasizes the importance of thoroughly integrating the Buddha’s teachings through practice in a systematic step by step manner, developing shamatha or calm-abiding meditation, vipassana or insight-meditation and bodhicitta or awakened mind.
The teachings will be hosted by the BodhiPath Karma Kagyu Buddhist Center of Menlo Park. They will be held at Stanford University. Please bring your own meditation cushions. |
Biography
The Shamarpa lineage is a line of incarnate lamas who
since the 14th century have reincarnated as teacher and
disciple to the Gyalwa Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu
lineage. The present-day 14th Shamarpa Mipham Chokyi Lodro
was born in 1952 in Derge, Tibet as the nephew of the 16th
Karmapa.
As predicted by Buddha Shakyamuni, “In the future,
a great bodhisattva with a ruby red crown will come to help
the suffering of the multitude, leading them out of their
cyclic bewilderment and misery.” – in the Shamarpa,
the Buddha’s prediction was fulfilled. Shamar Rinpoche
founded the worldwide Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers and recently
established the Shri Diwakar Vihara Institute, a Buddhist
Research and Educational Institute in Kalimpong, India where
many monks are being educated.
Among his many worldwide activities, Rinpoche has overseen
the reprinting of the Tengyur, a body of 214 volumes in
which prominent Indian and Tibetan masters elucidate the
teachings of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni.
