Helpful Information

His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche is 14th in this line of highly realized lamas who, since the 14th century, has reincarnated as teacher and disciple to the Gyalwa Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu lineage. As predicted by Buddha Shakyamuni, "In the future, a great bodhisattva with a ruby red crown will come to help the suffering of the multitude, leading them out of their cyclic bewilderment and misery." In the Sharmapa or red hat lineage, the Buddha's prediction is fulfilled. Shamar Rinpoche is the founder of the worldwide Bodhi Path Karma Kagyu Buddhist Centers.

Kunchen Pema Karpo (1527-1592), the most learned and famous of the illustrious line of Drukpa Kagyu Lineage holders, contributed 24 volumes of collected works on Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, logic, literature, history and astrology which have been studied by all sects and traditions to this day.

The Four Stages of Mahamudra Meditation is a text that elucidates the system of meditation called mahamudra. The term mahamudra is often explained as referring to the uncontestable validity of the experience. For example, if a document bears the Great Seal of the Emperor, then there is no question as to the authenticity of that document. Similarly, it is said that during the genuine experience of mahamudra, one has no question that one is directly glimpsing the true nature of mind and that recalling and stabilizing this experience leads to profound certainty and eventual enlightenment. There are four distinct stages of mahamudra meditation which are: simplicity, one-pointedness, one taste, and non-meditation. These stages are taught and realized progressively.

Bodhisattva Vows are from the tradition of Shantideva in the lineage of Nagarjuna and will be given by Shamar Rinpoche in the shrine room of the Menlo Park Bodhi Path Center.

The ceremony will consist of three parts with short breaks in between:

  • The Seven Branch prayer
  • Vows received in several small groups
  • Concluding prayers

Accommodations for Out-Of-Town Guests

Hidden Villa Hostel (for Bodhi Path Members)

Ten miles from Stanford University and the Menlo Park Center is Hidden Villa Hostel. It is a 1600-acre working organic farm and wilderness preserve and the oldest hostel in continuous operation in the US. Please click the pictures for full-size photographs. It has been rented by Wisdom Foundation from April 5-10. This is to allow travelers to settle in the evening before the first event and to spend the night after the final event having a good night's rest before traveling on the morning of the10th. This facility accommodates a maximum of 38 people. There are 28 single beds in four cabins and 3 double beds in 3 separate private rooms. These have been reserved for couples. Another private room has been reserved for monks. It would be possible for two more people to bring their own tent or their own mattress. "The Hut," one of the dorm cabins, has plenty of extra floor space for a couple of mattresses. In addition, the facility has a detached bath house and a main building that has a fully equipped kitchen, living/dining room, and screened-in porch. For important information, customs, and rules of the hostel please see their website: www.hiddenvilla.org

The cost of staying at the hostel for the entire five days, if filled to capacity, would be $150 for a single person staying in the dorm or their own tent and $375 for a couple staying in one of the three private rooms.

Food is not included but the hostel kitchen is available to guests who wish to prepare their own meals or organize cooking together. There will be a simple catered lunch at midday on Monday for the members' meeting. Monday evening's picnic will be hosted by the Menlo Park Bodhi Path Center.

Please note: unfortunately, all places at the Hostel are now filled for this event.
